EVENINGS OUT

Bad as HIV is, the other STDs are still out there

Tackling a subject that most would prefer to sweep under the bed, the Gay Men's Health Crisis of New York City recently released a frank new brochure called "The ABCs of STDs."

The publication asks and answers the most significant questions about sexually transmitted diseases: Which ones are serious? Which ones aren't? How do you know if you have one? What do you do if you have one? How can you avoid them? And how are they connected to HIV?

the welcome mat is out and the porch light is always on. For everyone.

Written in consultation with Daniel C. William, M.D., P.C., the brochure examines such. sexually transmitted diseases as hepatitis A, B, and C, syphilis, herpes, parasites, warts, gonorrhea, chlamydia, non-gonoccocal urethritis, crabs and scabies.

"STDS are still very much with us,” said Richard Elovich, GMHC's director of HIV prevention, “and their prevalence rates are rising."

(FOR GAY MEN)

In September 1997, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that over the past four years the incidence of gonorrhea in gay men had risen an alarming 74%.

"If we've learned anything from the AIDS epidemic, it's that safer sex is not easy. Throughout the AIDS crisis, gay men have accomplished the extraordinary feat of changing their sexual behavior. But it's no longer enough to tell gay men to use condoms-we have to realize that sex is more complicated than that. It involves risks and gay men need to keep evaluating the degree of risk we're willing to take."
